Chozos

SOCUÉLLAMOS

Los Chozos, typical of the construction typology and tradition of Cuenca and Albacete, is one of the best examples of popular architecture in dry stone, that is, without mortar.
The chozos date back to the 15th century and are probably of livestock farming origin, although their expansion during the 19th and 20th centuries was linked to the cultivation of vines.

The “chozos manchegos”, constructions of different structures, built with a technique of Neolithic origin, in the past were used as a shelter both by transhumant shepherds and vine growers, when the weather conditions were adverse, or when their homes were so far away that their archaic means of transport could not withstand the journey.
In Socuéllamos there are six different types of chozos, and one of the most outstanding, because of its truncated cone shape, is the one situated in the area known as ‘La Tercera’. You can visit its replica in the Torre del Vino Museum .
