Lagoon complex in Alcázar de san Juan
Lagoon Complex
ALCÁZAR DE SAN JUAN
This area was declared a Natural Biosphere Reserve, and it is made up of 695 hectares composed of three lagoons belonging to La Mancha Húmeda. It is a perfect place to observe unique species and enjoy nature .
The three lagoons that form part of this complex are: La Veguilla, Camino de Villafranca and Las Yeguas. La Veguilla is a lagoon with purified water, which means that it receives water practically all year long and is one of the wetlands of La Mancha where you can observe the highest number of bird species. The Camino de Villafranca lagoon, the largest of them all, and Las Yeguas are semi-seasonal, depending on the local rainfall.
The fauna that inhabits the lagoons is of particular interest, much of which can hardly be seen anywhere else. There are water birds such as stilts, shelducks, pochards, pochards, red and shoveler ducks, grebes, marsh harriers, black-billed guillemots, crab egrets, purple herons … and in the surrounding area ospreys, Iberian barracudas and ortega. A perfect place for ornithological tourism.
