Museo de la Alfarería
ALCÁZAR DE SAN JUAN
Located in the old Convent of San José (17th century), the “FORMMA, Museo de la Alfarería de la Mancha” (Pottery Museum) exhibits a wide range of pieces from the main pottery-producing centres in the region of La Mancha. Ceramist and clay potters have been moulding the clay for centuries to achieve the optimum shape to satisfy every day-to-day need.
The Museum has three floors, each dedicated to a different theme of La Mancha ceramics :
Semi-basement, MANOS CREADORAS (CREATING HANDS). Here we can learn about the pottery production process, representing the technological aspects of La Mancha clay.
Mezzanine floor, DE TODO EN BARRO (EVERYTHING IN MUD). It collects the repertoire and typologies in ceramics: for fire and cooking (the vedriao), for liquids (vessels for water, wine and milk) and special pieces for playing and other uses.
Upper floor, EN CASA Y EN EL CAMPO (AT HOME AND IN THE COUNTRYSIDE). This floor is dedicated to the daily uses of these objects, both in domestic tasks and in the fields (shepherding, pig slaughtering, olive cultivation, viticulture and cereal production).
The collection, donated by Jesús María Lizcano Tejada, includes farming implements, esparto grass objects, agricultural furniture and antique utensils and images, which provide an opportunity to learn about the old ways of life in La Mancha, which have survived until very recent times due to the large rural base and the late industrialisation of this land.
