Wine tourism in Villarrubia de los Ojos

Our location is an important destination for oil and wine tourism, as it is a land of vineyards and olive trees that produce oils and wines that are famous at national and also international level. But it is also more than this. Decisive events in the history of Spain have taken place here, and you can visit different places of historical and cultural interest. You can also discover our natural heritage, with its varied flora and fauna, as we are in a privileged geographical location, and enjoy signposted hiking routes. Not to mention the exquisite local dishes that can be tasted here and the gastronomic events such as the Ruta de la Cuchara and Ruta de la Tapa that are organised on a regular basis.

In the region of La Mancha, between the first spurs of the Toledo Mountains and the wide plains of La Mancha, we can find the municipality of Villarrubia de los Ojos, whose name has its Latin origin in the term Rubeum, referring to the golden colour of the land.

In the 11th century, it was called Villa Rubeum, later Villarrubia, and from the 16th century onwards, Villarrubia de los Ajos. From the 18th century onwards, it was called Villarrubia de los Oxos del Guadiana, which evolved into the present-day Villarrubia de los Ojos.

Surrounded by the waters of the Gigüela and the Guadiana, before their union in the National Park of Las Tablas, Villarrubia de los Ojos was already inhabited in the Bronze Age. It also has sites from the Roman period and ruins of a road.

On 2 May 1466, an important event that changed the history of Spain took place in this town. The Master of Calatrava, Pedro Girón, travelled from Almagro, at the head of 3000 men, to meet D.ª Isabel, Infanta de Castilla, the future Isabel the Catholic, with whom he was to marry. Unexpectedly, D. Pedro died in Villarrubia de los Ojos, thus avoiding his marriage to the future Queen of Spain.
