The Infante Sebastián Gabriel de Borbón, Prior of Castile in the Order of San Juan, proposed the construction of a canal that would collect the surplus water from the Lagunas de Ruidera in order to irrigate the lands of the municipalities from Argamasilla de Alba to Arenas de San Juan.
