Old town hall
Old town hall
SOCUÉLLAMOS
Throughout the Middle Ages, there were no town halls, and meetings were held in the private homes of the most influential citizens. The mayors, then judges and executioners, decided the fate of the town’s citizens with great freedom. In the 16th century, Socuéllamos asked for a “repartimento”, i.e. a special tax to have its “casa ayuntamiento”.
The house was bought from Don Juan de Valdepeñas. An old coat of arms can be seen on the façade of the Calle del Cura, with the arms that probably once represented the town. The most important renovation took place in 1590.
